A team of class action attorneys has launched an investigation into Google’s† practice of collecting data transmitted over unencrypted WiFi networks worldwide. As a part of its Street View project, Google equipped numerous vehicles with specially designed cameras to capture 3D images of the environments the vehicles traveled through. In addition to the cameras, the Street View vehicles were equipped to access and collect all data transmitted over unencrypted WiFi networks within range of the vehicles. This means that at any time a Street View vehicle passed by an unencrypted network, Google likely captured passwords being entered on websites, images being downloaded, and other similar information.
